Nigerian business tycoon, Folorunsho Alakija, says going to the university was not her destiny as she was able to achieve her dreams without a degree.
Alakija, one of the richest black women in the world, said this on Thursday at the Excellence in Leadership program, an annual event organised by Daystar Christian Centre, Ikeja, Lagos.
The founder of Rose of Sharon motivated the audience by saying that she never allowed a lack of university education to suppress her dreams and ambition.
“If I had the opportunity of going to the university, maybe I would have come out with a second class upper or lower but that didn’t happen; that wasn’t to be my destiny,” she said.
I would have loved to go to the university as we all know that university education is good but some of us who have not gone, it is not the end of the world.”
Alakija said she was able to attain her present position because she was determined and ready to pay the price that came with all the challenges she’s had to surmount.
“Having put my foot in the door, I decided I was not going to turn back”, she noted, revealing that when she had to file a lawsuit against the federal government for taking 50 out of her 60 percent equity, she remained determined.
The case which took 12 years to reach a conclusion was a matter of determination, she said.
Alakija said she her person has been subjected to series of misconceptions due to the ignorance of people who don’t know her story.
The oil magnate noted that she is a product of hard work, sweat, tears, and tenacity, stressing that she’s not an overnight success.
“A lot of things have been said about me, some say I sold my way to the top; I remember that the headline of one of the national dailies in the country once said ‘Hairdresser given an oil block’. So I even became a hairdresser, one of the many names I was given.”
She encouraged participants at the conference to believe in themselves as it would be easier for others to believe in such people; she added that she believed in herself while moving from fashion designing to an unfamiliar terrain.
I made you a billionaire, Obasanjo tells Folorunsho Alakija

I made you a billionaire, Obasanjo tells Folorunsho Alakija

Folorunsho Alakija and Obasanjo
Lagos – Former President Olusegun Obasanjo said on Saturday in Lagos that Mrs Folorunsho Alakija, Africa’s richest woman by Forbes reckoning, was among the 25 billionaires he made during his tenure as President. Obasanjo stated this at the 2016 Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Forum.
The former president was reacting to an allegation by Alakija at the event, that the Obasanjo administration frustrated her effort when she ventured into oil business. Folorunsho Alakija and Obasanjo Alakija, who spoke before Obasanjo, alleged that his administration illegally took an oil block allocated to her company after her family had invested all its savings to strike oil in commercial quantity. “This oil block is in 5000 feet depth of water and was extremely difficult to explore. “It took 15 years from the time that we were awarded the licence in 1993 till 2008 when we struck the first oil “When this event happened, 60 per cent out of our 60 per cent equity in the business, was forcefully taken from us by the government of the day without due process. “We had to fight back by going to court to seek redress and it took another 12 years for justice to be served in our favour. “In all those years it was my trust in God, my perseverance and the support of my family that got me going,” she said. . She used her experiences to charge the 2000 budding entrepreneurs at the event to be dogged, determined and not to give up in the face of challenges. When Obasanjo spoke, the former president seized the opportunity to reply to the allegation by Alakija. “There is a saying in my part of the world that when a proverb touches you and you failed to reply, then you are a coward,” he said. Obasanjo explained that the action of the government then was in line with the Mining Act, which regulates oil prospection and exploration. “For you to come here and say that, for no cause whatsoever, you were denied what was rightfully yours, is not fair. “I do not know you from Adam and there is no reason I would have denied you what rightfully belonged to you. “So, you have struggled, and you have struck oil. God bless your heart. “My delight is to be able to create Nigerian billionaire and I always say it that my aim, when I was in government was to create 50 Nigerian billionaires. “Unfortunately I failed. I created only 25 and Madam, you are one of them,” he said. Obasanjo hailed the vision of Mr Tony Elumelu for helping to build African young entrepreneurs with his resources. He also urged the government to create conducive environment for people to move businesses into the country. The former president urged government to relax its visa policy and company registration process to encourage investors. He said the government should create certification centres in the country for easy exportation of agro processed products. The President of Sierra Leone, Bai Koroma noted that what transpired between Obasanjo and Alakija was part of the challenges and difficulties that leaders lived with in the discharge of their duties. With limited resources competing for unlimited demands and expectations from the people, leaders were seen to be larger than life, he said. Koroma also commended Elumelu for his project for African young entrepreneurs adding that his vision resonated with a new Africa development agenda.

“No Overnight Success Stories. It took me over 30 years…” Billionaire Folorunsho Alakija Shares Her Success Tips

One of the world’s richest women, billionaire oil tycoon and mother of four, Mrs Folorunsho Alakija, with $1.82 billion fortune, shared success tips in business with Forbes Africa TV correspondent, Peace Hyde.
Below are excerpts from the interview:
1. There are no overnight success stories:
It took Alakija just over 30 years to become one of the most influential women on this continent which goes to show that it takes time to achieve success.
2. Take control of your own career!
When Alakija realised that the company she was working with were hiring more people and it would take much longer for her to move up in the organization due to clogs in the system, she decided to quit and move on to a better position. Things only happen when you take control.
3. It Pays to invest in your growth
Sometimes to get to the next level, one has to spend time investing in ones personal development. After quitting her job, Alakija decided to study fashion to learn the trade and get qualified as a designer before becoming one of the leading fashion houses of her time.
4. You need to break out to break even!
Alakija won a fashion competition, which was the beginning of her breakthrough for her fashion label. That competition gave her national recognition and helped her to attract more customers.
5. Be vigilant, you never know when an opportunity is around the corner.
A chance meeting with an old friend on a flight to the UK was all Alakija needed to start thinking about the oil sector which now accounts for her $1.82 billion fortune. Next time you are in a Buka hut, think consider who might be holding your next big break.
6. No is never good enough!
Alakija initially had a number of rejections when she was looking to break into the competitive industry but each time she did more homework and went right back. Her persistence beat the resistance of the then oil minister who eventually awarded her the oil license.
7. Partnership is Key
As a business owner you may not be able to do everything on your own. Your ability to find the right type of partners to help you achieve your end goal will determine how effective you are as an organization. Alakija found technical partners before applying for her oil license giving her a much stronger chance of succeeding.
8. Time is an important factor of success
It took Alakija three years to get her oil licence and another three years to get a new set of technical partners to begin work. As an entrepreneur, your ability to succeed sometimes greatly depends on how resilient you are in waiting for your break through.
9. Sometimes a big break will look like a stumbling block
It is not all big breaks that look glamorous. Sometimes a break can be disguised as a barrier. When Alakija was awarded her oil block, it was one of the worst because it was deep offshore and there was no technology that had been developed to explore 5000 feet below sea level. But she still saw the opportunity and overcame the challenges.
10. Always expect the unexpected
After finally securing the oil block and finally reaping the rewards, Alakija had to now fight the government of the day who decided to back into their contract and take 40% of their 60% stake in the oil business. In business it is always prudent to prepare for the worst.
11. Know who your true friends are
When Alakija was in trouble with the government, they went knocking on several doors for help but nobody would help them. According to her, they suddenly became the plague with friends they had known for years all ignoring their phone calls.
12. When you have nothing to lose, choose to fight back.
Alakija and her family felt that they had everything to gain if they fought the government and won. At the time, everybody wrote the company off assuming the worst for the fledgling business. In the end, that risk paid off and they won.
13. You will not win every battle but you will win the war
Alakija’s battle with the government took 12 years and there were a lot of motions that were lost in court but at the end, her tenacity meant that they eventually came out as the victors in this battle.
14. Sign on the dotted line
Alakija had signed a contract with the government allowing them to back into the contract provided certain criteria were met. The government ignored the terms of the contract, which made their acquisition of the oil block void. In business, always have terms agreed and documented to avoid discrepancies.
15. Business has no Gender
Success in business is not the exclusive preserve of any gender but rather hard work and perseverance. Folorunsho Alakija is the only prominent female tycoon in the competitive male dominated oil industry proving that you can achieve anything you put your mind to.

Pope Francis says women will never be Catholic priests

Pope Francis says women will never be Catholic priests

Pope Francis, has stated that the restriction on women becoming priests will not be lifted. Speaking to a Swedish journalist on Tuesday, during a press conference on-board his papal plane, the Argentine, Pope said:
‘On the ordination of women in the Catholic Church, the last word is clear,' Francis said, referring to an apostolic letter written by Pope John Paul II in 1994. The letter holds that ordaining women was not possible because Jesus chose only men as his apostles. ‘It was given by St. John Paul II, and this stands.
"But for ever, for ever? Never, never?" the reporter asked in a follow-up question and Pope Francis replied:
‘If we read carefully the declaration by St John Paul II, it is going in that direction.
"Control your anger"- Alibaba shares story of a friend who was jailed after catching his wife with her lover in their matrimonial home

"Control your anger"- Alibaba shares story of a friend who was jailed after catching his wife with her lover in their matrimonial home

To caution people on how to manage their anger when they are faced with serious issues, Comedian Alibaba shared this story of how a married man became an ex-convict after he found his wife with her lover in their matrimonial home in Abuja. Read below
"This story I am about to share, you would have heard, told several times, in different ways. But mine is not a story. A friend of ours, a lawyer, in Abuja, was at a 5 day retreat and decided to dash back home to get something that couldn't wait. And meets his madam in an uncompromising position. And just as he and the lover boy got into a fight, lover boy broke free, ran for the door to the balcony, opened it and jumped for his dear life, when he heard madam say don't shoot him, shoot me instead. And he jumped to his conclusion. He hit his skull against something and died instantly. The case took like a year and our guy was jailed. The wife was held responsible for the whole tragedy. She tried to make people see how sorry she was, and even tried to say there was no more love between them... but the deed was done. No one cared. Now pause for a minute. Agreed the man had a right to get angry. Agreed the lover boy was wrong to go to a matrimonial home. Agreed he should not have gone for his gun. What if he had recorded it and told her to move out? Would he be an ex convict today? Guess what? The woman is living her life now and the only thing is she is adulterous. Not an ex convict. She can still run for elections. Remarry. And hey! She DID remarry. She tried to see him in prison but after she realized the futility, because the family banned her from even coming near her son, she gave up, relocated and started a new life abroad. The lesson in this is,#MaaSheyBooSheTo! Don't let your emotions make you use all your power and connections to deal with an issue that will be an overkill. Control your anger. Avoid people who work you up. Think twice. If you can not stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen. If you can not do the time don't do the crime... let us learn to control our emotions and anger. You don't want to know what the consequences of road rage have amounted to in surveys. No ones life is worth your life sentence. Think fast. Think twice. Think well".
